As strange as it may sound to be kicking off a new period of storytelling with a forgotten episode from the previous one, Black Widow is one of the most consistently entertaining characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The direction is as assured as it is imaginative. The aesthetics are appropriately grandiose, and the cast is outstanding. Even if the film fails to overcome Marvel's massive embarrassment of failing to grant Scarlett Johansson a stand-alone feature in over a decade of contractual availability, it does demonstrate how much she will be missed in the future.
The film takes place shortly after Captain America: Civil War, which was released in 2016. It also has a similar tone to that picture. Natasha — Johansson's titular Widow – has been found guilty of violating the Sokovia Accords, and Steve Rodgers is on the run. The treaty that, more or less, mandates that supers operate in society only if the government says so. Natasha sails ship for Norway and a low-key life, despite Thaddeus Ross' (William Hurt) lukewarm pursuit. If only it were that easy. Indeed, Natasha isn't long before she has the only known antidote to a Russian chemical mind-control agent. What do you mean by that? Yelena, her estranged sister, provided the photos (a typically astounding Florence Pugh).
Yelena, who was once a victim of the totalitarian drug in question, is determined to bring down the authorities behind the operation with her newly opened eyes. This is the Red Room, which has been hinted at in previous films and is now being commanded by the supposedly invincible Dreykov (Ray Winstone). Even with an Avenger on board, additional assistance will be required. Help arrives in the form of a couple Yelena and Natasha used to refer to as Mum and Dad. This was back in 1995, when they were living underground in Ohio as a phony nuclear family, designed to infiltrate S.H.I.E.L.D.Enter Rachel Weisz as Melina, a tough scientist, and David Harbour of Stranger Things as Alexei, Russia's one-time want tobe Captain America – aka: the Red Guardian. While Pugh definitely owns the show – no one does layered impetuosity like he does - all four are amazing. The film's innate chemistry is what lifts it above being dismissed as typical Marvel fodder. In a superhero blockbuster, the line between comedy and sadness has rarely seemed more precisely trodden.
